Announcing The Three Winning GTAN|Start Companies

Oneiric scores big at GTAN|START

Waterloo Region, Ontario – May 18th, 2016

The winner of GTAN|START is Oneiric Hockey. The hockey equipment company walks away with $10,000, named the GTAN|START 2016 winner, and is in due diligence for additional funding from Angel investors.

In an effort to secure equity investment to fuel the growth of the companies, the pitch competition was opened up to over 100 Angel Investors, venture capitalists and industry leaders. In addition to possible investment the companies also pitched to a panel of judges for cash prizes of $17,000.

Emily Rudow, Co-Founder of Oneiric Hockey said the experience of pitching in front of seasoned investors was incredible.  “The feeling is indescribable. We were up against some really tough competition which made the win that much more exciting. It reaffirmed our business idea and gave us the confidence to keep moving forward!”

Second place at $5000, went to Suncayr, a nano-technology company that has created a “spot” that warns when sunscreen has worn off exposing skin to UV. $2000 and third place was won by Skywatch. The space-tech company has built an online marketplace for satellite data and imagery.  All six GTAN|START companies had interest from the Investors and are in due diligence for the possibility of additional Angel funding.

“Highlighting great new startups and connecting them with Angel Investors and early-stage funding is what we do at GTAN, and tonight was a success,” says Rob Douglas, GTAN President. “All six companies will get the benefit of working through due diligence, which is a great experience for the founders, followed by the real possibility of funding.”

GTAN|START is an annual event that celebrates dynamic early-stage companies, who have demonstrated the originality, skills, and experience necessary to grow. The goal is for these companies to scale and join the ranks of Waterloo Region’s most promising startups.
