June Investor Meeting Recap

On June 19th, GTAN members, guests and student participants part of the University of Waterloo and University of Wilfrid Laurier’s Startup Funds attended our June Investor Meeting, the last gathering before our summer break. GTAN’s monthly investor meetings will return in the Fall, with the next meeting scheduled for September 18th.

Attendees saw pitches from three entrepreneurs who shared their innovative ideas and business plans with angel investors, including Oreka Solutions, Acorn Biolabs and Paddle. All three companies will be moving into due diligence. Learn about each below.

GTAN also had the privilege of presenting awards to deserving recipients who are part of the GTAN community and have demonstrated excellence over the past year at our annual Pauli Awards Celebration. The Company of the Year award was presented to an Investee Company who had a successful recent exit. See the winners here in our recap.

Jon Duschinsky, CEO of Oreka Solutions, was first to present. Oreka Solutions is an Agri-Tech company who is harnessing the power of insects to make food healthier and agriculture more sustainable. By breeding and rearing Black Soldier Flies, Oreka optimizes the insect’s essential nutrients and healthy fats and uses these to make Protein +, a natural superfood for poultry, fish, swine and ruminants. Protein + makes animals healthier, helps them grow faster and reduces the medication they require.

Dr. Drew Taylor is the CEO of Acorn Biolabs, a company that is cryopreserving people’s own cells for future personalized regenerative therapeutics and genomic analysis. This process provides medically relevant information into patients’ current and future health. Cells collected before the onset of disease and advanced age can be successfully cryopreserved, to be later grown and converted into therapeutic cells. Acorn Biolabs offers a simple, non-invasive in-home collection process for clients to harvest their cells.

The final pitch was delivered by Pat Whelan of Paddle. Paddle is an AI-powered career pathing solution. Paddle helps companies keep their talent by recommending new jobs within a company, before they begin to look elsewhere. Did you know that the number one reason why people leave their jobs is they don’t know what to do next to grow their career? Paddle is solving this issue by connecting employees to new internal jobs using machine learning.
