Kicking off our 8th year!

It has been an exciting year for Golden Triangle Angel Network (GTAN)! We’ve been working hard to connect up and coming entrepreneurs with experienced Angel Investors, and this year we will continue to support local companies to work towards putting Waterloo Region on the global startup map.

Let’s take a look at the top stories from GTAN and our investees in the September 2015 – August 2016 season.



Laurier Startup FundSeptember started off with a bang! Nicoya was awarded $50,000 at Communitech’s Rev Centre Stage pitch event.

Wilfrid Laurier University named the school of business and economics after Mike Lazaridis, local entrepreneur and philanthropist. We’re proud to work with the Laurier Startup Fund – educating, coaching and mentoring students of the Lazaridis School of Business.



Intellijoint Surgical beat the odds by bringing their product to market in less than five years, and obtained regulatory approvals for its surgical tool in Canada and the U.S.

Miovision formed strategic partnerships with Ecopia and Brisk Synergies to pioneer real-time visualizations of cities and transportation networks.



Miovision celebrated it’s 10th anniversary, and Plum won $250,000 at the 43North Business Competition in Buffalo.



Screen Shot 2015-12-15 at 10.13.08 PMAt our 5th Annual Pauli Awards, Andela took home the top prize, Diane Wolfenden won the David Borges Community Builder, and the MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund (IAF) won Angel of the Year.



2016 kicked off with Intellijoint Surgical receiving FDA clearance for their hip surgical tool. We also reflected on why Waterloo Region is the heart of Canada’s Technology Triangle.


Aeryon Labs was recognized for their outstanding achievement at the 2015 Unmanned Systems Canada Conference and was presented with the award recently at their headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario.


March was an exciting month! Two GTAN Investee companies received FedDev Ontario funding: Nudge Rewards and Plum. Maintenance Assistance also secured a Series A funding round of $5 million.



Miovision announced their partnership with Swift Labs to develop new products, and Aeryon Labs used their drones to help map dangerous areas hit by the earthquake in Ecuador.



IMG_1760Oneiric was named the winner of our annual GTAN|Start pitch competition. Two other companies went home with prizes and many others with investment connections.

Our partners at AC Waterloo celebrated their 10th year with a visit from Gov. Gen. David Johnston.

 to fund development of their CGM contact lens.

We were thrilled that GTAN Startup of the Year, Andela, raised $24 million in a round backed by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and GV (formerly Google Ventures).



Canadian-techCB Insights released their Periodic Table of Tech in Canada, which featured GTAN Investees Kik, Top Hat and PumpUp.

On July 18, P&P Optica technology was sent to the International Space Station (ISS) on SpaceX-9 spacecraft.



Miovision had a fantastic year. They wrapped up our season by releasing their free tool to help cities improve the flow of traffic.

Spartan Bioscience launched the world’s smallest DNA-testing device, and Dejero Labs played an integral role in bringing the Rio 2016 Olympics to Canadian television screens.
